Womens Nationals: What placement means, plus a list of Wisconsin registrants

Womens Nationals is this weekend, May 6th-8th, in Fort Worth Texas. The 8U-14U age groups are a national-level freestyle event. For the U15, U17, U20 and U23 age groups, placements are a determining factor in Team USA’s 2022 World and Pan Am Team selection criteria. Here’s a look at the team selection process and who’s registered. (Team selection information is sourced directly from USA Wrestling.)

2022 U15 Pan American Selection Process (November 4-6, Rio Negro, Columbia)
Womens Nationals serves as a qualifying tournament into the U15 Pan Am trials for birth years 2007-2009. The participating athletes must meet one of the following criteria to qualify into the final Pan American trials selection event: top 8 from 2022 U15 Nationals (Ft Worth), top 8 from 2022 16U Fargo, top 3 from 2022 Women’s Nationals – 14U age eligible (Ft Worth)

2022 U17 Pan American & World Team Selection Process (World Championships: July 25-31, Rome, ITA. Pan American Championships: June 24-26, 2022, Buenos Aires, ARG.)
Womens Nationals serves as the World and Pan Am team trials. USA Wrestling will follow rank order 1st-8th to determine the World team, and 2nd-8th for the Pan Ams. Finals at Womens Nationals will be a best three series.

2022 U20 Pan American & World Team Selection Process (World Championships: August 15-21, 2022, Sofia, BUL.Pan American Championships July 8-10, 2022, Oaxtepec, MEX.)
Womens Nationals serves as the World and Pan Am team trials. USA Wrestling will follow rank order 1st-8th to determine the World team, and 2nd-8th for the Pan Ams. Finals at Womens Nationals will be a best three series.

2022 U23 World Team Selection Process
The World team selection process for 2022 has changed from prior years. In the past, the champion at U23 Womens Nationals earned their spot on the team, as did the 2nd place finisher on the Pan Am team. The selection criteria now includes placement at Senior World Team Trials and Final X, if age-eligible.

  1. The highest-ranked, age-eligible, athlete from 2022 Senior Women’s Freestyle National Team
    1. Final X winner, Final X runner-up and 3rd overall senior athlete via the 2022 Senior Women’s Freestyle World Team Trials
  2. U23 World Team Trials Champion
    1. Invite to summer national team camp (room, board and facility access funded)
  3. If no age-eligible national team athlete accepts the opportunity to compete at U23 World Tournament or if U23 Champion declines, 2nd and 3rd place finisher at the U23 trials following rank order will be selected for the U23 World Championships
  4. Senior Women’s Freestyle World Team Trials 4th place finisher
    1. In Senior Women’s Freestyle World Team Trials weights that have a medalist sitting to Final X, the 5th place finisher will be next in line for the U23 World Championships
  5. U23 World Team Trials 4th place finisher
  6. National team coaches will make a recommendation to the Women’s Freestyle Sport Committee for final approval
    1. Event results and competitive readiness will be taken into consideration
