Wisconsin wrestlers hit the mats in the Dells for a second week in a row at USA Wrestling’s Northern Plains Regional Championships. The event is one of a six-part series organized by USA Wrestling during the spring. The events bring together some of the toughest kids from surrounding states, and sometimes across the country, to showcase the Olympic styles of freestyle and Greco-Roman.

In addition to tough competition, the event serves as an auto-qualifying opportunity for the 16U and Junior National Championships (Fargo) in July. The top-six place winners in 16U and Juniors earn the opportunity to represent their state teams. Wisconsin had 104 wrestlers place in the top six between Greco, men’s and women’s freestyle in those age-groups.

In men’s freestyle Wisconsin had five champions. 16U champions: Daniel Heiser (145), Eli Leonard (160) and Garett Kawczynski (220). Benjamin Bast (126) and Rhett Koenig (138) were champions in the junior division.

We had ten champions in women’s freestyle. 16U champions: Taylor Whiting (106), Emjay Neumann (117), Chloe LaRue (144), Tiani Lemieux (152) and Brooke Huffman (180). In the junior division were Angela Bianchi (112), Caitlyn Kelley (122), Madilyn Peach (127), Kylie Rule (132) and Alexandra Hofrichter (164).

Six champions led the way for Wisconsin in Greco-Roman on Sunday. In the 16U division was Garett Kawczynski (220) who won titles in both styles. Junior Greco champions include Liam Neitzel (120), Amryn Nutter (132), Gunnar Hamre (152), Ashton Miess (160) and Espyn Sweers at 195.

The top-six place winners that qualified for their respective weight class and style at Fargo do not count against the allotted state numbers Team Wisconsin can bring.
