Fargo Blog Day 3: All of the men’s freestyle athletes advancing to day two at the Junior and 16U National Championships

Fargo, North DakotaMonday marked a thrilling start to men's freestyle at the 2024 USMC Junior and 16U National Championships in Fargo, the largest day of competition at the event. Wisconsin brought a tough contingent of 148 wrestlers, with juniors competing this morning and 16U athletes taking the mat in the afternoon. 

The event for men's freestyle is contested over three days with today featuring intense preliminary rounds. Tuesday will see action ramp up even more as wrestlers compete through the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals, medal matches, and championship finals on Wednesday. 

Wisconsin's junior team of hammers advanced 25 wrestlers to the championship round of 32. Among this elite group are returning All-Americans Charlie Millard (165), Kellen Wolbert (138), Danny Heiser (150), Caleb Dennee (175) and Garrett Kawczynski (215). Owen Wasley (175), Liam Neitzel (126), Jacob Herm (157), Aidan Gruedenfelder (113), Dawson Johnson (138) and Tristan Steldt (132)—all 2024 WIAA state champs—have also advanced to the round of 32.

In addition to the championship hopefuls, another 42 Wisconsin wrestlers remain in podium contention on the consolation side of the brackets.

In 16U freestyle, Camden Rugg (100) and Zahn Beal (106) are in the championship round of 16, 25 are in the championship round of 32, and 20 more will battle in the consolations.
