Wisconsin had a whole crew of wrestlers hit the mats in Rochester over the weekend for USA Wrestling’s Northern Plains Regional Championships!
Northern Plains is part of a series organized by USA Wrestling during the spring that brings together some of the toughest kids from surrounding states (and some travelers from around the nation) to showcase the Olympic styles of freestyle and Greco-Roman.
The Northern Plains states include Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, but wrestlers from any state can register and compete. In addition to tough competition, the event serves as an auto-qualifying opportunity for the 16U and Junior National Championships (Fargo) in July. The top-six place winners in 16U and Juniors earn the opportunity to represent their state teams.
Greco
Junior Sullivan Ramos earned titles in both Greco and freestyle at 165. In Greco, additional champions included U17 World team member Colton Weiler (Junior, 157) and Alex Penzkover (16U, 144). Kids champions were: Cameron Allen (10U, 71), John (JV) Reimer (12U, 63), Adam Husk Jr. (12U, 74), Kolten Mueller (14U, 92), Colton Hamill (14U, 100), Hawke Garrett (14U, 110), Gabriel Beyer (14U, 120), and Jacob Penzkover (14U, 126).
Freestyle
Junior champions included Camden Rugg (113), Hunter Stevens (144), Sullivan Ramos (165), Eli Leonard (175), and Cael Leisgang (285). In 16U, champions were AJ Woerpel (100), Collin Hamm (157), Easton Kammerud (165), and Owen Schacht (190). Kids winners were Kolten Mueller (14U, 92), Hawke Garrett (14U, 110), Reece Vendegna (14U, 115), Jacob Penzkover (14U, 126), Grant Melichar (14U, 175), JV Reimer (12U, 63), and Adam Husk (12U, 73).
Women’s
Women’s freestyle saw seven wrestlers in the 16U division come out on top: Cassidy O'Connell (95), Cora Stewart (110), Elaine Hay (115), Faye Schachtner (125), Amelia Soltis (170), Madeline Sorensen (190), and Autumn King (207). Dealya Collins earned a junior title at 135, and champions in the kids age groups were 14U: Bree Schmidt (105), Cora Bighley (115), and Aaliyah Miller (150); 12U: Maddyn Siefert (64-69) and Marissa Zeitler (126-132). Miller also won a Greco title in the 14U division.
The top-six place winners that qualified for their respective weight class and style at Fargo do not count against the allotted state numbers Team Wisconsin can bring. A document of auto-qualifiers and those that qualified for Fargo through state will be posted in the next few weeks!
Congratulations all — way to battle this weekend! Check out the complete results here.
