The Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestling program will hold the Superior International Wrestling Camp again this summer. The camp, which targets Cadet and Junior-aged wrestlers, will be held June 5-12 on the campus of NMU.

The camp will consist of four days of practice and two days of competition, giving every wrestler an opportunity to wrestle eight matches.

International teams from France, Germany, Canada, Sweden and the Czech Republic have attended in the past. This year, Sweden has already committed to attend and will bring 17 Cadet and Junior-age athletes.

Joining the camp will also be Junior-age athletes from the NMU-OTS squad. Teams and individual athletes from across the country are also expected and registration for the camp is now open.

Coaches Rob Hermann and Aghasi Manukyan from the NMU-OTS will lead the camp. Hermann has won four National Greco-Roman titles and was the U.S. Olympic Team head coach in 1996. Manukyan’s wrestling history includes participating on the Soviet Union and Armenia national teams, competing in the 1996 Olympic Games and being crowned 1993 World Champion. Manukyan has also served as head coach for the Armenia National Junior Greco-Roman Team.

“This is a great chance to sharpen your wrestling skills,” said Hermann. “There are not many opportunities for U.S. athletes to train alongside international athletes without leaving the country. Every wrestler will get up to eight competitive matches and learn various Greco techniques. This is a great way to get our Cadet and Junior World Teams and FARGO wrestlers ready to compete at the highest level.”

Coach Hermann hopes to see 60 wrestlers from the United States in attendance at this year’s camp.

“When it comes to Greco-Roman, Americans are forced to play catch up since we spend our time wrestling a different style in high school and college,” U.S. National Greco-Roman coach Matt Lindland said. “The opportunity to train Greco exclusively will help our athletes close the gap on our international opponents. I would love to see our best athletes get to this camp and train and compete with the foreign countries.  Our American athletes need to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to learn and have fun with Greco and upper body wrestling.”
