Women’s Nationals and the 2023 Team USA Selection Process

Some of Wisconsin’s best wrestlers are registered for Women's Nationals next weekend in Spokane, Washington.

Three of them, Kylie Welker (U20 76kg), Macey Kilty (U23 65kg) and Alisha Howk (U23 55kg), are World medalists. Welker, the 2021 junior World champion, made the U23 and senior world teams in the same year. Kilty is a 2018 cadet World champion and has four additional age-group medals. Alisha Howk earned a bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in 2022.

Women’s Nationals is part of Team USA’s selection process for the U15, U17, U20 and U23 age groups. Below is an outline of what placement means. Team selection information is sourced directly from USA Wrestling.

U15 Pan Am Team (Oct. 13th-15th, Panama City, Panama)
Women's Nationals serves as a qualifying tournament into the U15 Pan Am trials at a date TBD in August. Participating athletes must meet one of the following criteria to qualify into the final Pan American trials selection event: top 8 from 2023 U15 Nationals (Spokane), top 8 from 2023 16U Fargo, top 3 from 2023 Women’s Nationals – 14U age-eligible (Spokane).

U17 Pan Am & World Team (Worlds: Jul. 31-Aug. 6, in Istanbul, TR. Pan Ams: Jun. 22-25, in Mexico City, MEX)
Women's Nationals serves as the World and Pan Am team trials. USA Wrestling will follow rank order 1st-8th to determine the World team, and 2nd-8th for the Pan Ams. Finals at Women's Nationals will be a best of three series. Top three make the national team.

U20 Pan Am & World Team (Worlds: Aug. 14-20, Warsaw, Poland. Pan Ams: Jul. 6-9, 2023, Santiago, Chile)
Women's Nationals serves as the World and Pan Am team trials. USA Wrestling will follow rank order 1st-8th to determine the World team, and 2nd-8th for the Pan Ams. Finals at Womens Nationals will be a best three series. Top three make the national team.

U23 World Team (Worlds: Oct. 23-29, Tampere, Finland)
Women's Nationals serves as part of the World team selection criteria for U23 athletes (outlined below). Top three make the national team.

  1. The highest ranked, age eligible, athlete from 2023 Senior Women’s Freestyle National Team

    • Final X winner, Final X runner-up and 3rd overall senior athlete via the 2023 Senior Women’s Freestyle World Team Trials
    • Deadline for this athlete to accept the position will be Monday, June 26th, 2023 @ 5:00pm Mountain Time
  2. U23 World Team Trials Champion

    • If a National Team Member were to accept the U23 World Team spot, that athlete will be given the opportunity for a funded tour.
  3. If no age eligible national team athlete accepts the opportunity to compete at U23 World Tournament or if U23 Champion declines, 2nd and 3rd place finisher at the U23 trials following rank order will be selected for the U23 World Championships

  • A true 2nd, if needed, will be contested at a location to be determined prior to August 31, 2023.
  1. Senior Women’s Freestyle World Team Trials 4th place finisher
  • In Senior Women’s Freestyle World Team Trials weights that have a medalist sitting to Final X, the 5th place finisher will be next in line for the U23 World Championships
  • U23 World Team Trials 4th place finisher
  1. National team coaches will make a recommendation to the Women’s Freestyle Sport Committee for final approval
    • Event results and competitive readiness will be taken into consideration

Age-eligible athletes that place in the top 8 at Women’s Nationals auto-qualify to represent Team Wisconsin at the 16U and Junior National Championships (Fargo), and age-eligible athletes that place top 8 qualify to compete in the High School Recruiting Showcase.
