Welcome to the 2024 freestyle season!

If you're a female wrestler (or the parent/coach of one) we encourage you to get involved in freestyle wrestling this spring! The Olympics, collegiate wrestling, and international competitions for women are all contested in freestyle. During the spring season the WWF and local event organizers around WI host USA Wrestling sanctioned competitions for wrestlers of all ability levels.

Opportunities to compete and train with Team Wisconsin, key competitions and team selection criteria for National Duals (14U, 16U and Juniors) and Fargo are outlined below.

CAMPS
Wisconsin athletes have two opportunities to train with Team Wisconsin in the women’s freestyle program.

1) Freestyle camp series now - April 2024: The final camp in our women’s freestyle camp series is April 21st at Aviators Wrestling Club. This camp follows Aviators annual international freestyle and Greco tournament and is a great opportunity to train with international athletes. The WWF camp series, which runs from Sept. to Apr. at various locations across the state, is open to all Wisconsin 14U, 16U, and Junior women with a USA Wrestling athlete membership, and are led by coaches on the WWF national team staff. Register here. View the camp flyer here.

2) Training Team Camps May 2024 - July 2024: After freestyle state, the WWF hosts three Training Team Camps geared toward prepping Team Wisconsin athletes for National Duals and Fargo. The first camp at the Mauston Talon Training Center (May 5th) is open to all Wisconsin athletes (14U, 16U, Juniors) for $25, and then the National Duals and Fargo prep camps are reserved for athletes qualified for those individual teams.

WISCONSIN NATIONAL TEAM OPPORTUNITIES
National Duals and the Junior and 16U National Championships (aka Fargo) are the two events Wisconsin brings a unified team of athletes to compete against in the nation. This is “Team Wisconsin.” Submit your interest in the National Team here.

14U and 16U Women’s National Duals
The 14U and 16U National Duals teams will travel together and compete in Westfield, Indiana, June 19th-22nd. The 14U and 16U combined dual team camp (required) will be on Saturday, June 15th, at Team Nazar's Training Center in Madison. Team cost: $375.

  • 14U Team Selection Process: The 14U National Dual Team is selected based on placements at these 2024 events, in the following order: 1) Womens Nationals, 2) WWF Freestyle State, 3) Northern Plains, and 4) WWF Girls Folkstyle State. Coach Koontz will also consider the 2023 results from Women's Nationals, Northern Plains, and WWF Freestyle State. Coach Koontz has the final determination of rosters.
  • 16U Team Selection Process: NEW EVENT The WFS 16U National Dual Team is selected based on placements at these 2024 events, in the following order: 1) Women's Nationals, 2) the WWF Freestyle State tournament, and 3) Northern Plains. Head Coach Bryan Koontz makes the final roster determinations.

Junior Women's National Duals
The Junior National Dual team will compete in Tulsa, Oklahoma, June 19th-22nd. The Junior dual team camp will be on Sunday, June 9th, at UW-Stevens Point. NEW: the junior team will fly to Tulsa. Team cost: $575.

  • Junior Team Selection (NEW): The Junior Girls National Duals Team will be selected using USA Wrestling’s Performance Index rating. The USA Wrestling Performance Index (PI) measures consistency over time and rates the probability of a person winning against an opponent based on their body of work. The PI system uses historical data from all USA Wrestling sanctioned freestyle events. The WWF will use PI information through 2024 freestyle state to determine the Junior National Dual team by May 10th. Opportunities for wrestlers to improve their PI ranking in 2024 include Women’s Nationals, the Girls HS Showcase, WWF Freestyle State Championships, and any other local or national freestyle tournament sanctioned by USA Wrestling through May 5th.

FARGO
The Junior and 16U National Championships, aka Fargo, is a high-caliber USA Wrestling national event where the top freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers are tested against the rest of the nation individually and as respective state teams.
All athletes must join through Team Wisconsin and are required to attend the training team camp in River Falls.

  • Team Selection: Auto-qualifier opportunities include placement in the top-6 at USAW Regionals, top-8 at Womens Nationals (U15, U17, U20), top-3 at freestyle state, and previous year's 1st-8th place at the 16U and Junior Nationals or an age-level World team member. One wrestle-off spot will be available per weight class at the pre-Fargo training team camp. Complete details are posted here

  • Cost & Registration: JR or 16U $525. Both divisions $670. Athlete fees will cover hotel, transportation and registration. The cost does NOT include the uniform package/singlets. Registration will open in May.

  • Camp & Competition Dates: July 10-11: 16U and Junior WFS Fargo camps in River Falls, WI; July 12: 16U and Junior WFS travel to Fargo and weigh in; July 13-14: 16U and Junior WFS compete at Fargo.

  • Uniforms: There are NEW singlets for 2024! Fargo athletes are responsible for purchasing their own singlets; singlets from prior years may not be used. Wrestlers on the National Team who do not wish to purchase a new set of singlets may use a generic reversible singlet provided by the WWF coaching staff.

KEY SPRING EVENTS
Fargo and National Duals are the main events for athletes at the end of the season. Below are key events, like World Team Trials, and others that lead up to those events and impact team selection.

Women’s Nationals–April 12-14th in Spokane, WA.
Experienced athletes should consider competing at Women's Nationals, April 12th-14th, in Spokane, Washington. Womens Nationals is the highest caliber domestic age group event for women’s freestyle serving as World Team Trials for the U17, and U20 divisions, and will determine the Pan American teams for the U15, U17 and U20 divisions. Champions in the U23 division may also earn a place on the U23 World team dependent on age-eligible OTT National Team members. The top three athletes in the U17, U20 and U23 divisions earn a place on USA Wrestling’s National Team. View all of Team USA’s selection criteria here.

Beginners FS/GR State—April 27 in Mukwonago, WI.
The WWF hosts a true beginners freestyle and Greco state championships for athletes looking to get their start in the Olympic styles of wrestling! This is a great opportunity for girls to test out freestyle in competition and still be able to register for the state championships the following weekend.

Girls High School Showcase—April 27-28 in Las Vegas, NV.
Qualified high school girls can compete at the Girls High School National Recruiting Showcase in Las Vegas. This is the only women’s division being contested as part of the US Open events this year. This event can be a great opportunity for high-level competition, recruiting, and to increase your PIN rating.

Freestyle State—May 4th in Wisconsin Dells, WI.
WWF Freestyle State, May 4th in Wisconsin Dells, is an auto-qualifier event for Fargo (top 3), and a great place to test out your talent against the best in Wisconsin. Freestyle state is the 2nd qualifying criteria Coach Koontz looks at to plan the National Dual teams behind Womens Nationals for the 14U and 16U teams. This will be the final opportunity for junior athletes to impove their PIN rating for the dual team selection.

Northern Plains—May 10-12 in Rochester, MN.
Northern Plains is an auto-qualifier event for Fargo (top 6 in each weight) and serves as part of the team selection consideration for the 14U and 16U dual teams.
